This Baume & Mercier Capeland automatic — a refined and much-loved chronograph — arrived in our workshop with several major mechanical issues.
The movement was no longer functioning properly: the chronograph couldn’t be engaged, the timekeeping was irregular, and the mechanism would occasionally seize.
A full service was essential to restore the accuracy and proper operation of the calibre.

Diagnostic Upon Arrival
Based on the handwritten report and our internal inspection, several critical issues were identified:
- Broken barrel-bridge screw
- Broken retaining spring preventing proper anchoring
- Significant dirt inside the movement
- Dirty / clogged calibre showing clear signs of wear
- Gear train not engaging or winding correctly
- Excessive friction causing irregular timekeeping
- Chronograph unable to start or reset properly
- These findings confirmed that the watch required a full mechanical restoration.
Work Performed in Our Certified Workshop
To restore this Baume & Mercier Capeland to perfect working order, our watchmaker carried out:
✔ Complete disassembly of the movement
Careful separation of the chronograph module and the gear train components.
✔ Replacement of defective parts
- Barrel wheel
- Gear-train wheel
- Screws from the chronograph module
- Bridge components
- Mainspring (new, factory-sealed in green blister)
- Components of the setting mechanism
- Worn chronograph parts
- Original dial removed for cleaning and inspection
All oxidized, broken, or excessively worn parts were replaced with new, fully compatible components.
✔ Full ultrasonic cleaning
Removal of dust, dirt, and old lubricant residues.
✔ Lubrication with appropriate oils
Each contact point received the specific lubricant recommended for chronograph calibres.
✔ Reassembly & adjustments
After reassembling the movement, it recovered:
- stable amplitude
- consistent accuracy
- a fully functional chronograph with proper reset

Why Did These Issues Occur?
The problems observed are typical of:
- advanced mechanical wear,
- dried or insufficient lubrication,
- a movement that has not been serviced for a long time,
- or micro-shocks that can break screws or a retaining spring.
Chronographs are more complex than standard movements and require regular maintenance to prevent internal damage.
How to Preserve a Baume & Mercier Capeland Chronograph
To protect the movement long-term:
✔ Service every 4–6 years
Prevents broken bridges, screws, and premature wear.
✔ Avoid using the chronograph when the watch is low on power
This increases strain on the mechanism.
✔ Avoid even minor shocks
Impact can weaken delicate chronograph components.
✔ Keep the movement clean
Dirt and dust drastically increase friction and wear.
Final Result
After a complete restoration and replacement of all necessary components, this Baume & Mercier Capeland now operates with:
- optimal accuracy,
- a clean and smooth-running gear train,
- a fully functional chronograph,
- and a movement restored to like-new condition.
A crucial intervention to ensure the longevity of a high-quality automatic chronograph.
