A watch waterproof test is essential to ensure long-term protection against water and humidity. Temperature changes, gasket ageing, an unsecured crown, or exposure to chlorinated water can all cause a watch to lose its waterproof integrity. After any case opening, a new watch waterproof test is necessary to confirm the watch’s resistance and prevent moisture damage.
👉Natural ageing of the gaskets
Rubber hardens over time, losing its elasticity and no longer ensuring a proper seal.
👉Sudden temperature variations
A rapid change from hot to cold (e.g., sauna → cold outdoor air) causes metal dilation and contraction.
Result: micro-gaps, condensation, or moisture infiltration.
👉 Crown not fully secured
One of the most common causes of water entering a watch during everyday use or swimming.
👉 Exposure to chlorinated or saltwater
Chlorine and salt accelerate oxidation on the case and gasket sealing surfaces.
👉Case opened without a water resistance check
Any intervention on the watch requires a new test and, if needed, gasket replacement.
❌ Fogging or condensation under the crystal
❌ Corrosion of internal components
❌ Oxidation of the stem and movement
❌ Complete stoppage of the calibre
❌ Irreversible damage requiring costly restoration
Even a minimal amount of moisture can permanently compromise a watch movement.
| Conditions | 💧Bar / m |
|---|---|
| Resistant to splashes — not suitable for immersion. | 3 bar / 30 m |
| Everyday use, shower not recommended. | 5 bar / 50 m |
Swimming and moderate immersion. | 10 bar / 100 m |
| Diving watches. | 20 -30 bar / 200 -300 m |
| High-pressure tests up to 40 bar (on request, depending on model). | 40 bar / 400 m |
✔ Case and sealing-surface inspection
Crown, tube, pushers, caseback, and crystal.
✔ Air-pressure waterproof test
Detection of pressure variations and micro-leaks.
✔ Hydrostatic pressure test up to 40 bar (depending on model)
Advanced control comparable to the procedures used by Swiss manufactures.
This step is included only when the watch is designed to withstand such pressure.
✔ Gasket replacement when necessary
No pressure testing is carried out if a gasket is damaged or compromised.
✔ Final validation test
Ensures the watch regains its proper level of waterproof protection.
A waterproof test:
– cannot compensate for a damaged gasket
– is only valid at the moment it is performed
– must be repeated once a year or after any case opening

Even if a watch looks perfectly intact, it may have already lost its waterproof protection.
A rapid temperature change or entering water with an unscrewed crown can instantly cause moisture infiltration.
A watch waterproof test in Geneva verifies whether your watch still meets water-resistance requirements, but it cannot compensate for worn gaskets, a damaged crown, or a corroded tube.
